MHRA Logo
The establishment of a new logo for online retailers of medicines was introduced by the EU Directive on falsified medicines, to help patients identify trustworthy websites.
Patients are advised to check for the presence of the MHRA logo and click on this logo, to check that the website is legally retailing medicines online.
When clicking on the logo, patients will be taken to the MHRA website that lists all legally operating online retailers in the UK.
This register contains all websites that are authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to sell medicines online.
You can use this register to check if a website is legally allowed to sell medicines to the public.
The EU common logo must be displayed on every web page that offers to sell human medicines to the public.
Pharmacy-only and prescription-only medicines can be supplied by registered pharmacists.
All other general retailers can only sell general sales list products.
Fake medicines are widely available online, that pass themselves off as real, authorised medicines.
This Directive aims to prevent falsified medicines from entering the legal supply chain and reaching patients, by strengthening existing controls and introducing new measures. The implementation of the logo for online retailers and the establishment of registers of legitimate online retailers is a new milestone in the implementation of the Directive.
